2021-22 Selection Process

Start: January 2021
Final decision on scholars: June 2022

Students who fulfil the St. Paul’s Foundation selection criteria (read here) can apply for the selection process between January and March every year. Those who wish to apply must have an excellent academic track record and the desire to embrace all the opportunities that a St. Paul’s Foundation scholarship offers.

The 2021-22 selection process attracted 140 candidates who submitted their school reports, video and essays in English. Eighty candidates passed the first stage and were invited to take cognitive and English tests at St. Paul’s in April 2021. Of the 80 candidates, 23 were invited for online interviews with the school’s academic team. Of this group, 17 were chosen to take part in the  Preparation Course.

“I had an excellent experience during the selection  process, to be more specific, during the Preparation Course.  I learned many new things, how to overcome my shyness and limiting beliefs that it would be difficult to talk to people in English”

Over the course of the year, candidates  got familiar with the school and improved their English, while the school got to know them better and  assessed their potential. The Preparation Course is designed to benefit candidates, regardless of whether they are awarded a scholarship.

While attending their own schools, the 17 prospective scholars had English lessons at Cultura Inglesa, Foundation’s partner, for six months and regular meetings with school members. During the second term of the course (in 2022), the candidates visited St. Paul’s three times a week and attended lessons with around 30 St. Paul’s teachers. Over this time, the candidates underwent psychological assessment and received a home visit to analyse their family environment. For the first time, this year’s visit was run by a social worker, bringing an even more important input to the selection process. From this group of candidates, ten were awarded scholarships (for places between Form 2 and Form 5) in June 2022.

Here are the 5 steps of the selection process:

  1. Application form submission and documentation analysis
  2. A visit to St. Paul’s School to perform online tests
  3.  Individual interview
  4. A Preparation Course period of up to one year including an English immersion course and interview with family members
  5. Final decision on scholars
