From 28th to 30th November, the St. Paul’s School Theatre Company delighted audiences with their traditional school play. This year, the production was titled “A Monster Calls,” an original piece devised by pupils, inspired by the book by Patrick Ness. The students worked collaboratively to bring the novel to life on stage, showcasing their creativity and dedication.

Our scholars participated in various aspects of the play. While some took on front-facing roles, others contributed as prop and set artists, members of the production team, and musicians. In total, 14 scholars were involved, either as part of the cast and ensemble, or as the band and other backstage roles.

Claudia, an Upper 6 scholar, shared her experience: “Theatre is for me the most didactic class of life. I learn to express myself, to connect to people, to convey clearly my thoughts and feelings, to speak in public, and I become more aware of my surroundings. This year, everything was put to the test with a play that required our full commitment and attention, as it approached a delicate story. It was a great privilege to tell people a story that they can learn from and share a process of creation that taught me so much.”

Aurora, who joined us this year in Form 2, expressed her excitement: “Being part of the play was an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience. Even with the challenges that we faced, it was really exciting being able to take part in this awesome cast. I wonder where I might go next because of it!”

In addition to the play, the St. Paul’s Parent Teacher Association organised a special bake sale at the entrance of the theatre. All baked goods were kindly donated by a scholar’s mom, and the revenue from sales went to support the Foundation’s Scholarship Programme.

These experiences provide our pupils with unique opportunities to grow holistically, developing their abilities in drama while also connecting them with their peers. The impact of participating in such productions extends beyond the stage, fostering skills that will benefit them in all areas of life.
