St. Paul’s Foundation scholars had the chance to visit the 35th Bienal de São Paulo – the second oldest biennial in the world and the largest contemporary art event in the Southern Hemisphere and the Americas. This year, the exhibition theme is choreographies of the impossible and counts 121 participants with approximately 1,100 artworks in different mediums.

The students, accompanied by their parents, participated in an exclusive guided tour and were accompanied by their Art teachers, Ms Rebelo and Mr Muller. During their visit, pupils had the privilege of seeing international examples of contemporary art next to pieces by Brazilian artists. They also had the unique opportunity to meet and talk to the Filipino artist Kidlat Tagimik who explained the ideas behind his installation and answered our scholars’ questions. “It was a real privilege meeting him, he is very kind and down to earth”, says Analice, mother of our scholar Elisa.

The Head of Art Ms Rebelo, highlights the positive outcomes of providing an experience such as this to the pupils. “The experience of looking, discussing and understanding or not the forms of art in the exhibition contributes to the formation of well-rounded citizens, broadening the comprehension of themselves in relation to others, their cultures and ideas.”

Mr Muller adds that “All this together can have pupils think about the world in different ways, preparing them for a more international and inclusive way of thinking that will be crucial for their future in the IB diploma, in college and beyond.”

The visit to the 35th Bienal de São Paulo reinforces St. Paul’s Foundation’s commitment to offering holistic educational opportunities for our scholars both inside and outside the classroom.
